Night & Day

Here are two photographs shot on the SAME MORNING, at the SAME LOCATION. The difference, as they say, is night and day.

In digital photography, colour is often over-looked as an element of composition.

Want vibrant dawn colours strewn across a candyfloss sky? Get up super-early, wrap up warm, and make a twilight pilgrimage to your chosen location. You'll use a long exposure to depict the passage of time, so set up your camera on a sturdy tripod. Hurry up and wait...

If you strike the jackpot, you'll get the right quantity and types of clouds that make a striking sunrise. And, on a wind-less morning, you can capture beautiful reflections in water.

Or... do you want to portray the seasonal changes in the landscape? You will need direct sunlight, so the sun can paint the landscape. You may not need a tripod and can shoot hand-held.

Venture outside at sunrise, and shoot through the Golden Hour, when the sun's rays are at a low angle. Let the autumn sun fire the foliage in warm hues of orange, red and yellow, contrasting with a polarised blue sky overhead.

Blue versus Orange is a complimentary colour scheme, (as these hues are opposite on the colour wheel.)
